Silver Bullion Bars
Common sizes are 1 oz silver bars, 10 oz silver bars and 100 oz silver bars. 1000 oz silver bars are also available but, because of their size and weight, it is common for investors to pay an institution to store them rather than take physical possession. Pictured above is a Johnson Matthey 10 oz silver bar. Most silver bars will contain a "Hallmark" which identifies the manufacturer (refiner), weight and purity of the silver bar. In this case Johnson Matthey, one of the top refiners of silver bars, has included their logo and stamped a serial number on this 999 silver bullion bar. Silver bullion bars, especially those with Hallmarks by noted refiners such as Engelhard and Johnson Matthey, are readily recognized for their value and very liquid. You can find 1 oz silver bars and 10 oz silver bars at most dealers, many coin shops, dealers' web sites and auction sites offering precious metals. Larger silver bullion bars are available from dealers. Below you will find more pictures of silver bullion bars. From left to right are: the obverse view of a Johnson Matthey 10 oz silver bar and Engelhard 10 oz silver bar; the reverse view of both of these silver bars; the obverse and reverse views of 1 oz silver bars from World Wide Mint, Engelhard, National refiners; and an obverse view of an unpolished 10 oz Silver Bar from Engelhard.
Why consider investing in silver bars? One reason is you can usually get more silver for your money than with other forms of silver because of the lower premiums. Another reason is it is a "cleaner" way of investing in silver - much cleaner than circulated silver coins and silver coin bags. If you decide to invest in silver bullion bars, be sure to compare prices of a few dealers. Premiums charged can vary widely among even major dealers.
